Artists Statement

 

Being brought up in the beautiful Somerset countryside, before moving to the Midlands, discovering the varied and picturesque scenery of the Peak District National Park, my artworks explore both natural and urban landscapes, recreating them in a geometric, hard-edge style that moves between representation and abstraction.

Working on wood panels I use a photograph of the landscape from which I create a digital drawing that isolates and simplifies the key forms, conveying them as a series of straight lines. The digital drawing is then accurately transferred to the wood panel before each element is precisely masked.

I use a limited palette of heavy bodied acrylics to produce solid blocks of colour that create an overall feel for the particular landscape. Ultimately my goal is to present a minimalist interpretation that emphasises the fundamental forms of the landscape in a modern style.
